The official website for the Sammy Sidekicks Team for the 2004 North Kitsap American Cancer Society Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a 24 hour event held every year in various communities around the country. Teams gather to raise money for the society, while doing crazy things, like walking or running for 24 hours. While a person or two from each team is on the track during the 24-hour period, the rest of the team supports the walkers by camping out, providing water and food and raising money in different ways. This year’s event was held at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo, WA  from 6 p.m. July 16 to 6 p.m. July 17. Our team was raising money by holding bowling and horseshoe tournaments at our camp site.

"Sammy's Sidekicks" consists of employees of the North Kitsap Herald newspaper in Poulsbo, WA. Our team name comes from one of our beloved columnists, Sammy Quinn, who wrote for the Herald for years. She handwrote her columns, filling up exactly three sheets of lined notebook paper and dropped them off at the office or faxed them in. We personally typed up each one of her columns until her death in December 2003.

She was a fighter against cancer until it took her away from us.

Since May 2004, Sammy’s Sidekicks worked to raise money for the Relay event. We held a bake sale at the local farmer’s market in May and put together a rummage sale in our parking lot in June. We held a bake sale in the office, as team members cooked up some delicious cookies, which sold like hot cakes, bringing in more dough for our team. We also held a car wash in July.

This Red Hat Lady accompanied us during our bake sale, generating many comments and cat-calls.

County Commissioner Chris Endresen officially proclaimed May 8, 2004 as Sammy Quinn and Kathleen Sutton Day in Kingston, WA, at the Kingston Farmers Market. Kathleen Sutton was also a  popular figure in Kingston, known for her tireless effort to raise money for cancer research.

Co-captain Carrina gives a thumbs up as she prepares to sell her delicious white chocolate macadamia nut bars and raspberry muffins. The guy across the way from us practically purchased them all. We thank him for his sweet tooth.

Liz gives Joe a break from washing cars, as he had just worked hard, like the Irishman he is, to scrub gunk off cars.

Miss Poulsbo Canon Henness graciously gives Rob her donation to the American Cancer Society in exchange for a beautifully cleaned car by the Sammy's Sideckicks team.
